Dakota Shy is an exclusive Napa Valley winery that produces small-batch, high-quality Cabernets sourced from some of the best vineyards in Napa Valley.
The story of the founders is as interesting as the wines themselves. Todd Newman left North Dakota with $1,500 and an Amtrak train ticket, determined to find his passion. He worked for hospitality legend Pat Kuleto and at the famed Michelin-starred Martini House in Saint Helena. He then transitioned to wine, rising through the ranks from Cellar Rat to Cellar Intern, and eventually Cellar Master at the Revana Family Vineyards Estate.
But Todd’s passion was on the hospitality side of the house, so he shifted to play critical roles in the early development of two new wine projects under the Revana Wines family. Once he had enough money saved, he purchased two tons of fruit in 2008 and began the dream that would become Dakota Shy.
Partner and Winemaker Tom Garrett got his start in winemaking in the family garage, working with small batches of Cabernet Franc. His professional career in the wine industry began in 1999 when he joined Turley Wine Cellars in St. Helena to learn the craft as a cellar hand. From there, he spent 15 years working with exceptional winemaking mentors at some of Napa Valley’s finest wineries, including Joseph Phelps, Robert Mondavi, and Revana Family Vineyards. Since 2013, Tom has focused solely on Detert Family Vineyards and Dakota Shy.
Dakota Shy is the story of a remarkable team brought together by a shared passion for the wines, history, and vineyards of Napa Valley.
Our story began in 2012 when two friends and business partners, Tom Garrett and Todd Newman — both with years of experience working under winemaking legends — came together to make their own mark on Napa Valley. They set out with a goal to craft wines that could stand alongside the best the world has to offer. Their dream grew to include a first-class winery estate in the heart of Napa Valley and partnerships with 16 unique and exceptional Napa vineyards.
With one stage of the dream achieved, Todd Newman eventually left to pursue other interests, while winemaker Tom Garrett remains at the helm, leading our talented team as we dream even bigger.
With deep roots in Napa Valley and over a decade of producing outstanding Cabernets at Dakota Shy, Tom leads as we continue striving for greater quality in our wines and to provide extraordinary hospitality to everyone who visits the Dakota Shy property.
